Cosmetology holds annual Hair and Nail Competition

The Cosmetology students welcomed many local salon professionals into their lab to judge the annual Hair and Nail Competition on November 9. Metro, Reve, Polished Nail Bar and many more salons were represented that day.

Each year, the senior students are able to determine how and what they want to compete in. This year the girls pre-colored and cut their manikins and had to style the dolls in 30 minutes in front of the judges.

“The hair and nail competition gave me a good concept for how it is going to be in a real salon when clients come in with pictures of how they want their hair to look. We took our pictures from the internet and replicated them the best we could on our manikins,” senior Maya Douglas said.

Scores were based on resemblance to the picture each student picked as well as safety, overall neatness of style, and outcome of the color.

In addition to hair, the students were also given 30 minutes to create a nail design set on a sand hand. This was judged again on the resemblance to the picture as well as neatness and overall appearance.

The junior students had picture inspiration as well and were required to replicate an upstyle from any picture they found. They had a central fall theme for their nails.

Winning the senior hair competition was Morgan Tellam followed closely by Douglas and Courtney Rowland. The nail competition winners had familiar names with Rowland placing first followed by Isabel Vasquez taking second and Douglas claiming third.

For the juniors, the hair winner was Kyla Storey while Southview student Alexia Navor took second and Ashley Arnold took third.

The fall nails were done in class the week before. The juniors were allowed time to find inspiration or create their own ideas. Camryn Weiner placed first with her nail design. Emma Black and Sophia Heuberger took second and third.
