It seems as if everyone is over winter, over the cold, the snow, and basically everything winter has to offer, except the snow days. Snow days are the one thing that makes winter worth going through, being able to sleep in and miss that test you had scheduled or relief because you didn’t do the homework that was due.

The snow day policy used to be that after five missed days schools had to start making them up. The Ohio Department of Education revised the policy this year to state, “School districts, joint vocational school districts and chartered nonpublic schools must be open for instruction for a minimum of 1,001 hours for students in grades 7 – 12,” according to the ODE website. Sylvania Schools is in school well beyond this minimum, leaving the schools almost 20 extra days to work with.

Many school systems across the state have adjusted their policy to meet their own educational needs. Sylvania Schools’ policy states that on calamity days teachers will be able to assign homework over google drive, be accessible through email to students and teachers may come in to work at their school. Along with that, Sylvania Schools will start making up days after the ninth calamity day. These new policies are to ensure that days off do not interfere with students’ ability to learn.
