The staff had smashing success with their charity softball game. Many staff and faculty members participated on either the Gold or the Black team, with others helping with commentary, passing out concessions, or watching from the stands. The game ended after the sixth inning with the gold team beating the black team 14 – 13.
“I feel awesome,” Gold team Captain Andy Roth said. “We won.”
He enjoyed the competitive spirit of the team and the relationship the members had with each other.
The score went back and forth every inning, keeping the game a close match. The Black team had the lead in the middle innings with their double home runs led by Chris and Caden Irwin, but the Gold team made some good plays that brought their score up to win.
In between innings, the National Honors Society staff softball committee, led by seniors Nathaniel Norris and Es Pikus, ran fun games for staff and students to participate in. The staff softball game is in partnership with NHS because of their DanceGOLD fundraiser. These games included running blindfolded around the bases, musical chairs, ring toss, and a hot dog eating contest. Willie the Wildcat was at the event and participated in many of the activities.
“I feel great,” senior Jake Huyghe, who participated in the ring toss, said. “I feel very accomplished and I look forward to my future as a professional ring tosser.”
Social Studies teachers Brian Blakeman and Mike Czerniakowski also helped make the games more entertaining. They acted as announcers and commenters, also keeping track of the score across the innings.
“It was my first time doing the play-by-play,” Mr. Blakeman said. “I really enjoyed it and it’s just another way I can help out.”
The softball game originally started with Choir teacher Jeremy Davis and Band Director Nathan Heath wanting to create a fun teacher event for the school. All the proceeds from the ticket and concession sales went directly to the Victory Center to help those in need. They raised $385 from ticket sales.
“It’s a positive event that raises money for a good cause,” Principal Mark Pugh said. “And I congratulate the Gold team.”
