The summer: it’s sunny, warm, you can go for a swim, or take a morning jog. The winter: cold, it’s just cold.
Staying active in the summer is easy, you don’t have to try to be active in the summer… you might actually have to try to be inactive in the summer.
But the winter? It’s cold, no one wants to be outside. Curling up in a warm blanket with some good food and a good movie is what sounds nice on a cold winter day.
But, the reality is, you can’t always just lie around during the winter. Staying active is an essential part of staying healthy. But how do you stay active in the winter weather?
Join a winter sport! You may think this sounds a little out of the question, but it really isn’t. If not a school sport, there’s recreational sports too. Sylvania Tam-O-Shanter offers winter rec sports such as, soccer, basketball, and swim. It can be as serious or as silly as you want. Joining an indoor sport is a fairly cheap, fun way to stay active.
Going to the gym is another option. Depending on where you go, the price differs. Planet Fitness offers single memberships from $10 and up a month, LA Fitness offers single memberships from $24.99 a month, or the YMCA/JCC offers memberships for youths (10-17 years old) for $20 a month. The first few visits at the gym might feel like a drag, but once you find out your prefered workout and you get into a routine of going, it won’t seem like such a drag anymore. Going to the gym may not be the cheapest option, but it is a good option to stay more active.
Bundle up, go for a walk outside. It might be pretty cold outside, but if you have no other options of anywhere to go to be active, try your own backyard or a local park. Put on your parca, gloves, and a hat. Go for a walk or a run and you’ll be warmed up in no time, maybe even sweating.
There are many options for staying active in the winter, you just have to be motivated to get out there and try them.
