Open House is a special event hosted by teachers and administrators for all students’ parents to visit Northview, where they can walk through their students’ schedules and meet their new teachers. This year, Open House created a positive environment for parents and staff alike.
“I like to go to the Open House to be able to meet and interact with the teachers and understand what the classes will be like,” parent Torri Daggett said. “I got a better understanding of what the teachers expect and what will be accomplished over the year, and I got to meet some new parents, which was fun.”
The event, which ran from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on August 28, allowed parents to follow a shortened bell schedule, during which they toured the school following their child’s schedule. At each class period, they had the opportunity to meet their student’s teachers and learn more about the goals and expectations of that class. Additionally, lemonade and cookie refreshments were set up in the cafeteria for all parents to enjoy.
Alongside the teachers and parents were several National Honor Society student volunteers, who helped guide parents around the busy hallways and direct them to each class. Some students even filled in for teachers who were unable to attend, handing out information about the class or playing videos that some teachers opted to make this year in preparation for their absence.
Student volunteers were also stationed to help explain certain clubs, where they handed out informational flyers and answered questions.
“I thought Open House was a great way for the parents to get more involved in their kid’s schooling,” senior volunteer Ananya Singh said. “Especially at the Science Olympiad station, it was nice to see parents encouraging their kids to get more involved in school activities.”
Open House provides a great opportunity for parents to understand more about their child’s schooling experience. It is an important event and is a true milestone in parent-teacher collaboration at the beginning of each year.
