SV Construction builds deck for Sylvania resident

Southview Construction Tech. teacher Bob Johnson has had the senior construction class working on various projects inside the shop all year long. Last year as juniors they built a fence for a local Sylvania neighbor. This year as seniors, they are building a deck for a Sylvania resident. A 16ft. x 20ft. composite deck to be exact. This type of decking is made of old recycled lumber and plastic that get treated together to form a board of whatever length available.  The wood is pressure treated and can be very heavy; the seniors have to load it on the bus, measure it, cut it, and build this from the ground up. Meanwhile the resident already has a previous deck there, so the seniors have to tear that one down before they can even start. The deck needs to be a driveway level which will also be a good challenge for the class, but Mr. Johnson has faith in them. “This is one of the best classes I’ve had in 25 years,” Johnson said. “They definitely will have tons of fun.” This project is estimated to start after the students return from Spring Break.
