It’s a new year at Northview and with it comes an exciting vision by the people tasked with making NV a happier place, the Student Council.

The Student Council, along with its key ally, the Class Governments, are planning a fall, winter, and spring like no other and several people figure to be key in making the magic happen.

First and foremost in the chain of command is Adviser Tami Blue. She intends for this to be a great year at NV, and for the “STUCO”.

Many of the usual events put on by the Government are on the schedule this year. Late October will see the Powderpuff Game, the annual girls’gridiron battle royale that this year will pit the Classes of 2017 and ‘18. Nothing new is planned for this event, according to Mrs. Blue, except the bonfire that usually accompanies the Game. The threat of inclement weather forced the bonfire’s cancellation last year.

Shortly after that is the most notable charitable fundraiser for the year, DanceGold. DanceGold, for those uninformed, is an event that aims to raise money for a charitable cause involving students standing for a long period of time. This may seem boring, but a number of exciting activities transpire during the event, making it one of Northview’s favorites.

Mrs. Blue is optimistic that DanceGold could draw an unprecedented 100% participation from within the large ranks of the STUCO/Government hierarchy. “We want everyone to do something,” she noted, be it participate, or donate various items for the event.

The apex of the STUCO calendar of events comes with the Turnabout dance in February. The time-honored girl-ask-boy dance tradition is preserved by the Student Council, which is in charge of decorating for the dance. High attendance from throughout the school is seen year in and year out, and it is a favorite of several STUCO higher-ups, including the most important figure in the entire organization, Class of 2017 President Morgan Lutz.

Morgan also had a lot to say about the principles behind Student Council, which is Northview’s largest leadership organization. “I’m looking forward to being productive, making this year a team effort, and having a lot of fun.” Much of the Government’s plans for the year were hashed out at their annual retreat this summer at Camp Storer in Michigan, a retreat that included a number of team-building exercises reflecting Morgan’s comments.

Life in the Student Government is no picnic, however, especially for the advisors. “For me, the hardest part [of Student Council] is being patient. I have to stop myself and be patient with the students instead of just taking over.”

However, the STUCO brass remains optimistic that the basic values of Student Council will help overcome any challenge in the organization’s way, as well as encourage new members to join. “Student Government is a great way to get involved and have your voice heard at Northview,” Morgan said, reflecting Mrs. Werner, the sophomore class advisor, who said Student Government is all about “helping [its members] become better humans.”

Students interested in joining student council – and it is not too late to do so – are encouraged to stop by Mrs. Blue’s room, E22, as soon as possible.
