NHS elects new officers, preps for next year

Election season has begun at Northview and one election in particular was the National Honor Society. This special group is made up of juniors with a GPA of 3.6 or above and have the four main skills: leadership, service, scholarship, and character.

There were six possible options members could run for including president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, co-head of the Learning Center Committee, and being one of six on the Blood Drive Committee.

Students had to be nominated by their fellow NHS members in order to run for the position. The students who were running for one of the four officer positions had to deliver a short speech in front of everyone whereas the students running for a committee did not.

“I was very impressed with how prepared the students were while delivering their speeches. They all sounded great and I can honestly say anyone of the people who ran would have done a great job in the position. This election was a difficult decision,” NHS advisor Darla Omey said.

Members were asked to vote the next day. For a student to win outright, they had to get a majority vote, which meant that each person had to accumulate at least 33 votes. Previous years, there were run-offs where students would have to vote again but this year, the four officers and committee positions all won by a majority, according to Mrs. Omey.

“It was very surprising to find out that there was not a run off. This is the first year in a while where this has happened but I guess it took some stress off the candidates because they were able to find out the very next day,” Mrs. Omey said.

The results were as follows: Geeta Rao as president, Emma Eding as vice president, Taylor Messinger as treasurer, and Claire Geoke as secretary. Mackenzie Elrod and Celine Schreidah are in charge of the Learning Center and Noah Froelich, Oliver Greive, Emily Lu, Josh Pawlczyk, Sejal Shah, and Kelsey Soldner are on the Blood Drive Committee.

“I can’t explain how excited I am for getting this position. I can still remember going to my older sister’s NHS induction and honor cord ceremony and watching her as president. From then on, I knew I wanted to assume that responsibility. With this, I really want to make a big impact our senior year and I’m glad I get to work with the three other girls,” Rao said.

The officers have not hesitated to get started on their duties. They have already met with Mrs. Omey to discuss the upcoming year and some of the important things that will be happening, according to Messinger.

“We have already done a lot of the behind the scenes work, planning for our first meeting and discussing upcoming events in the next year. I can tell that we are all going to work really well together. We even have our own group message that we have been communicating through,” Messinger said.

The officers will also meet with the outgoing officers soon, who will give them advice about being leaders and helping them to have a successful year, according to Mrs. Omey.
