Mr. Swaggerty leadership award

Student leadership is a quality many students strive for at Northview, but most great leaders learn from other great leaders. All around the school leadership is exemplified by both students and staff, but Principal Steve Swaggerty stands out through his role in creating the Leadership Academy and more importantly leading by example in his everyday demeanor at NV.

Mr. Swaggerty’s exceptional portrayal of what it means to be a good leader has not gone unnoticed as recently he received the 20 Under 40 Award, a prestigious leadership distinction.

The 20 Under 40 Award is given to 20 dynamic leaders in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan all under the age of 40.

Distinguished leaders that are nominated are presented this award annually with the intent to recognize these people for their exceptional work and motivate young people throughout the area to become community leaders, according to the 20 Under 40 website.

“Mr. Swaggerty is such an admirable figure and it’s hard not to look up to him. He’s personable, friendly, and always tries to make students feel like they belong. I think these traits really exemplify why he’s so respected as a leader and well liked by students and teachers,” junior Mary Matrisciano said.

To be eligible for this award, a person must be nominated and submit a profile to the 20 Under 40 organization. The 20 Under 40 website states, “From these candidates, an independent panel of judges selects 20 leaders to receive the award at a Fall recognition program. Judges consist of past honorees and community leaders.”

Mr. Swaggerty was nominated for the award because of his numerous contributions to NV. The school has grown with the programs he’s implemented to make the school a better place. Some of these programs include peer tutoring, structured after school help, Camp Creatives during the summer, The Leadership Academy, and Class Olympics to help bring the school together.

Mr. Swaggerty consistently referred to the NV team he has and how there wasn’t anything he could’ve accomplished without them.

“Nothing we do at this building is an individual effort and there’s a lot of teamwork that goes into keeping this place moving forward. The award has been a good reminder that I’m on an awesome team and when you’re part of a special group of people you can accomplish just about anything you want,” Mr. Swaggerty said.
