Med tech is a class that can be taken by Northview and Southview students at NV to see if they are interested in going into a medical profession. During the year students practice medical skills and learn about different job careers related to the field.
Med tech classes throughout the area, including Northview’s class, went to the regional HOSA competition on February 5. Students had a range of competition options to choose from.
Some of the things students could have competed in at the competition are HOSA bowl, a knowledge test, demonstrating medical related skills, presentations, and health posters.
Junior Baylie Hicks competed in the Pharmacy Knowledge Test because of her interest in the field of pharmacy.
“I shadowed a pharmacist from Wood County Hospital, which helped me understand more about the career. I also read a textbook containing different drug names and functions of drugs to help prepare me for the competition,” said Hicks.
According to Hicks, the test was in a Scantron format and she placed second in the event. She will be competing at the State HOSA competition.
“I honestly was not sure how I did on the test, but when I found out I got second I was so happy to have done so well,” said Hicks.  
Junior Aleah Ramirez competed in the Public Health competition along with juniors Rachel Frye and  Samantha Comperchio. In this category a presentation is created prior to the competition about skin cancer prevention and is presented at the event to be judged. The way groups chose to present their research can vary, but this group created a Powerpoint. The trio ended up placing second in their event.
“We worked really hard on this project and we have potential to do well at States. We are really excited about the corrections we are making to our Powerpoint to improve it, like including more visual aids. We have also had professional input from a cosmetic specialist that helped us a lot with our presentation. I hope all the work we have put into it pays off at States,” Ramirez said.
40 students qualified for the State competition and are working to improve their projects and skills within their category. The state HOSA competition will be held April 4 and 5 at the University of Toledo.
